Topsail Surf and Cycle is a new business, started by David Beckinsale, that provides rentals, tours, and bike repair. David, who is originally from south Florida (Fort Lauderdale), says they are thankful to be in Topsail and have been welcomed and hope to contribute to the community through their business and volunteering as much as possible. He resides in Surf City and has been here since 2020. He has found the area to be friendly and helpful.
Who They Are
Topsail Surf and Cycle, located in the south end of Topsail Beach, has been open for about eight weeks and supplies rentals of:
- e-bikes
- paddle boards
- kayaks, and
- surfboards
Additionally they offer repairs, and will be adding tours in the future. They want to help tourists and the community experience Topsail by bike or water. Rental delivery and bookings can be done via phone or their website.
A surfer from a young age, David grew up in close proximity to the beach, and his background experience includes funding, building, and growing a bike shop for five years. He says they hit a hurdle when
David says ”anybody can enjoy an e-bike and it’s actually quite easy and will have the same impact as a regular bike riding experience.”
Troubled Waters
He admits that they initially ran into hiccups due to setting up the business a little too close to the season. It was hard to get rental equipment but they made it and were able to get e-bikes from their preferred provider because they had a strong relationship from the past.
“We fulfill a need for the area we are in with our rentals, but we also find that educating people about marine life in the area and how to enjoy themselves will not only leave a nice memory of their time in the island but also the seed of appreciation towards nature and the ocean.”

What’s an E-bike?!
David explains an electric bike is a traditional bike that has a battery and a motor usually located in the rear wheel. Electric bikes can operate with or without power and offer different levels of assist that can propel the rider to 20mph. The pedal assist function on an electric bike works by pedaling the bicycle, and sensors tell the motor to go. When you stop pedaling the motor shuts off. The electric bikes at Topsail Surf and Cycle also have a throttle function which allows the rider to twist the throttle and go without pedaling (like a scooter). The range on their electric bikes is 20-30 miles per hour which is determined by the speed the rider is traveling, and whether they are using the throttle only or the pedal assist function.
