Surf City is replacing the iconic Old Swing Bridge, which has graced the island since the 1950s, with a new high-rise bridge. For years, the Old Swing Bridge was like a Welcome sign to tourists and locals alike. Surf City, North Carolina is located in the center of the 26 mile Topsail Island, and sits in both Pender and Onslow counties.

The old signs that adorn the Old Swing Bridge have seen many summers, and many storms. The rust and old wood, in contrast to newer wood planks tell a history of Surf City. The bridge has marked the depth of the water, and it has survived countless storms. The bridge has supported many families and people on their way to a happy and relaxing vacation, and has bid them “goodbye!” and “see you next year!” as they travel back across on their journeys home.
This view of Old Swing Bridge signs show the history of this quaint little island town, and embody the laid-back and relaxed beach lifestyle.
The Old Swing Bridge is featured as a backdrop for many gorgeous photographs. The unique lines of the bridge provide a contrast to the water that flows underneath, as well as the glorious North Carolina sunrises and sunsets.
Notice how the bridge sharply contrasts with the purple and pink hues in the sky,
as the water gently laps against bridge’s support pillars.
While many will be saddened to see the Old Swing Bridge replaced by the new-high rise bridge, the multi-use lane will be amazing, and should solve many current traffic issues. Locals and tourists will benefit from improved traffic conditions, benefitting our local businesses. Along with improved traffic flow, additional parking spaces are being added to prime waterfront locations, encouraging more visitors to our beautiful island!
We will all miss the Old Swing Bridge, and look forward to the convenience the new high-rise bridge will provide locals and tourists! I hope you enjoy these pictures – watch for pictures of the new high-rise bridge in the future! Cheers!
